Landscript 1

  • loan
  • Description

This painting, together with Landscript 2 [LI2007.72], was painted for the present exhibition. The two works are both landscripts, yet develop the method in different ways. Here a hillside is shown planted with a variety of different crops, distinguishing it from earlier paintings with more traditional, imagined landscapes. Many of the characters are familiar from earlier landscripts: 石 rock, 杏 apricot, 米 rice, 门 door, 窗 window, and there are several additions: 韭 leek, and 茴 fennel, for example. Some of the plots are arranged to compose the character for field 田 as highlighted in red on the first panel of The Suzhou Landscript (LI2007.73-76).
