    The Barlow Collection

The vase roughly follows a contemporary blue-and-white porcelain shape. This type of ware is known from the Zhangzhou kilns in Fujian province, where similar impressed and incised decoration has been found on other shapes.

The globular body rests on a nearly straight foot with very thick, low footring, and the tall slender neck terminates in a bulbous mouth. The body is incised with a cluster of hibiscus and bamboo on one side, a ruyi border at the shoulder and a wave border above the foot. The neck is decorated with a key-fret border, created by stamping, enclosed between engraved upright and pendant leaf motifs with incised veins, and has grooves and ridges around the bulbous section. The cream-coloured glaze is crackled.
