Vitreous coating applied to the surface of a ceramic to make it impermeable or for decorative effect.

Ceramic material composed of kaolin, quartz, and feldspar which is fired to a temperature of c.1350-1400⁰c. The resulting ceramic is vitreous, translucent, and white in colour.

The Barlow Collection
A similar bowl, excavated in Wuyuan county, Jiangxi province, is datable to 1211.
The shallow bowl has conical, slightly rounded sides with a somewhat flared rim and tapering foot with low footring. The inside is carved with a large-scale six-petalled bloom with overlapping spiralling petals, carved with multiple outlines and filled with combed details. The outside is plain. The transparent blue-tinged glaze leaves the base free, where grit is adhering, and the near-white body has discoloured a light brown.
