Chinese Prints 1950-2006 in the Ashmolean Museum

I regard life as a garden of art where I cultivate the flowers in my heart.

Chen Haiyan graduated from the Printmaking Department of the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts (now the National Academy of Fine Arts) and in 1984, following her graduation, she joined the department: she is now the deputy head. She likes to use the ‘bleed through’ (tou yin) technique to illustrate the spontaneous quality associated with Chinese brush painting. Inspired by Buddhist and Western thought, she employs dreams as her typical subject matter, often combining narrative text and figures.
