Nobleman and lady

  • Description

    On the terrace of a domed pavilion, a Rajput nobleman embraces a lady seated on his lap. Both hold wine cups and a maidservant has come bearing another flask of wine. A pair of peacocks stand by the tree in the courtyard. With its simplified composition and warm earthy palette, the artist follows court painting conventions but is closer in idiom to folk styles of southern and western Rajasthan. The word alangan (or alingan, ‘an embrace’) is inscribed on the dome above the loving couple.
