    The Barlow Collection

Vessels like this were traditionally used for growing bulbs at the end of winter, placed over water on decorative pebbles.

The piece is very heavily potted, the rounded sides tapering to a narrow, low rounded foot but resting on three seperately attached legs in form of animal heads biting claws. The faces are simply indicated with eyes, eyebrows, nose and mouth in relief. The sides of the vessel are decorated with two rows of bosses attached over raised bands to imitate the nails holding a drum skin in place. The smooth light yellowish-green glaze leaves the footring free, where the body has fired a light brick red, while it is nearly white under the glaze, visible where the glaze is worn.
