Decorative application of metal sheeting (generally of gold or silver) where the iron ground is first cross-hatched and the metal burnished on.

The A. H. Church Collection of Japanese Sword-Guards (Tsuba)
Designs in more or less flat tinted-gold nunome (asters, bamboo, orchid, plum-tree); the smaller buds of the tree encrusted in gold, the larger buds and the open flowers more boldly in silver with gold centres; raised border representing a continuous bamboo stem, with touches of gold nunome. Bold signature: Yamashiro no kui no jū ("resident of Y. province") Yoshinobu [Japanese text]. Perhaps Tanaka work (Group LVIII).
