Indian Block-Printed Textiles in Egypt: The Newberry Collection in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford
Bands of varying widths, the widest with heart or leaf shapes with beaded surrounds and a narrow band with a continuous vine down either side, as in Cat. no. 332 [EA1990.340]; in addition a band of linked diamond shapes and one of stylized bodhi tree leaves. The patterns are generally defined by white outlines against a red background and with red fillings.
Selvedge; the design bands are at right angles to it. A straight line of stitching follows next to the band of stylized leaves. The reverse is heavily saturated with dye. The heart shapes and the band of diamond pattern can be compared to double-ikat patola textiles. Additional stitching appears along the selvedge; it is a coarse white thread with traces of red dye, indicating that it was part of a seam that was sewn prior to printing.
