Indian Block-Printed Textiles in Egypt: The Newberry Collection in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford
A continuous design of linked cartouches and stars arranged as a grid, white on brown and brown on white respectively. Within each grid section is an ornate rosette, white with brown outlines and red details on a red ground.
The fragment is sewn together from two pieces, with a carefully stitched flat seam. There is a second seam at right angles, but only very small fragments of the added textile remain. The larger textile has a selvedge along the first seam, and its measurements are 22 cm. (warp) x 19 cm. (weft). The size of the block used was 9.5 cm. x 9.5 cm. The reverse is less saturated with dye than the surface.
