The Barlow Collection
Fragmentary pieces similar to this bowl, from the Yaozhou kiln site near Tongchuan in Shaanxi province, are published in Songdai Yaozhou yaozhi/The Yaozhou Kiln Site of the Song Period, Beijing, 1998, pl.LI, fig.5 and pl.LII, figs 1 and 2.
The bowl is rounded on the inside, conical on the outside, with a distinct ridge halfway up and a slightly flared rim. The outside shows six indentations, faintly visible on the inside. The straight foot is shallow, the base recessed. The inside is carved with a large-scale peony spray with a lush bloom among elegant foliage, neatly arranged to cover a circular area, leaving a broad band around the rim undecorated. The bloom has combed detail, the leaves have incised veins. The outside is simply decorated with radiating strokes around the upper half, ending at a horizontal incised line below the rim. Base and foot are glazed but the footring is unglazed, showing a brown-burnt biscuit with adhering grit.
