Chinese Prints 1950-2006 in the Ashmolean Museum

Between the gap of rule and non-rule, there is a space for one to wander at leisure and to be content with one's lot.

Zhou Yiqing graduated from the printmaking section of the Nanjing College of Arts (NCA) in 1976, and, following his graduation, he worked at the Wuxi Institute of Calligraphy and Painting until 1986. He then returned to the NCA to study oil painting, gaining a Master’s degree in 1989. He is now the head of the college’s Printmaking Department. Zhou’s early prints were mostly water-soluble colour woodblock prints, with propaganda-related subject matter such as industrial scenes. His recent etchings have mingled the tradition of Chinese landscape painting with the influence of Morandi (1890–1964) and reveal a quiet and simple character.
