  • Description

Cai Yixi (1947-2008) was born in Shantou, Guangdong province. As a child he moved with his family to Singapore. He studied watercolour under Chen Chong Swee (1910-1985) and at Lasalle College. After spending some time in Tasmania he returned to teach and practice art in Singapore.

Michael Sullivan (1916-2013) had extensive connections with Singapore’s art circle as he lectured in Art History at the University of Malaya in Singapore (now University of Singapore) from 1954 to 1960 and founded the University Art Museum with Khoan Sullivan (1919-2003). This painting was a gift of the artist when Michael returned to Singapore in 2004 for an exhibition of the sculptor Ju Ming (born 1938). The inscription reads ‘Professor Sullivan came to Singapore in the early summer of a jiashen year [2004]. He came to my studio despite his busy schedule and gave me his valuable opinion. I… present this painting of Mount Huang to him in memory of our meeting.’
