Calligraphy of Chairman Mao's poem Yellow Crane Tower

  • Description

Yellow Crane Tower is a famous landmark in central China at the confluence of nine rivers. In the third century it was the site of a well-known military incident, and is celebrated in several poems of the Tang dynasty (618-906). In this poem (composed 1927) Mao uses the five-character line scheme of Tang poetry (though the Tang compositions on this subject favour the seven-character line), mixed with historical allusions and a reference to the major Beijing-Guangzhou railway line that currently crosses the Yangzi at this spot. This silk image was woven in Hangzhou.
