Chinese Paintings in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford

Gao Fenghan was born in Jiaozhou, Shandong province, but his career as an official was spent in the Jiangnan region, where he associated with the Yangzhou painters. Although he is not one of the artists defined in the late nineteenth century as the Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou, Gao Fenghan is now regarded as part of the same group, along with Min Zhen (q.v.) and Hua Yan. The Yangzhou painters were known for their indivuality in painting style, and for their rejection of the orthodox painting tradition promoted in the seventeenth century by the theorist and painter Dong Qichang (1555-1636). From 1737 onwards rheumatism in his right hand forced Gao to paint with his left, and these latter paintings were particularly sought after by his contemporaries. In 1741 he retired, and returned to his native province in the north.
