    The Barlow Collection

The piece is heavily potted, with a pear-shaped body, a tall flared neck with down-turned rim, and a broad, slightly splayed foot. The horizontal luting lines are clearly visible. The yellowish-buff stoneware is exposed on the footring and base and otherwise covered with a white slip and yellow-tinged glaze. The sides are painted in brown with two phoenix in flight, each bearing a flowering sprig in its beak, and a scroll of similar blossoms above, all bordered by spiralling lines, with further lines around the neck. The uppermost and lowest areas were left plain. Inside the neck is an accidental brown splash.
