    The A. H. Church Collection of Japanese Sword-Guards (Tsuba)

    Shield-shaped, i.e. rounded oblong, with cusped base and mokkō top; the front modelled in low relief as a toad, its huge eyes rendered by silver and shakudō inlay; the plain back is encrusted below with a cloth bag in silver engraved [Japanese text] ju, "long life", and a gourd-bottle in copper and gold. Signed on the back: Gotō Mitsuhisa [Japanese text] and dated Ansei III (1856), summer. (Said to be a son of Gotō Mitsuhiro [Japanese text].)
