The A. H. Church Collection of Japanese Sword-Guards (Tsuba)

Fine nanako ground largely covered by delicate scrolls with tiny chrysanthemum badges and leaves, all in slightly raised gold; raised gold; raised border and rh. edgings with nanako of larger grain.

A piece of first-class workmanship suitable for Court wear. the MS. Catalogue has a note that this guard was bought as far back as the year 1873, before the time, that is, when Japanese sword-mounts began to flood the Western market.
