The A. H. Church Collection of Japanese Sword-Guards (Tsuba)

Very thick border of circular section with gourd-vine in relief on a billet-punched ground; the whole of this border is richly plated with gold; five of the spherical fruits being in silver; over the field, of fine nanako surface, run four trails of the vine, with some of the leaves in gold-veined shakudō and some of the fruits in copper or silver; kōgai-hole plugged with "cat-scratched" copper-gilt, the pattern apparently representing a garden-fence.

    De Ath Collection, lot no.450.
