Modern Chinese Paintings: The Reyes Collection in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford

The subject of this painting is two Han (206 BC- AD 220) dynasty debaters, the supremo Wu Lu (literally Five Deer) and the younger Zhu Yun (Vermilion Cloud), described in the title as "breaking his horn". It is not clear who will succeed in this discussion, only that eventually Zhu Yun will be the greater debater. The force of the debate is evident in the dynamic sweeping brushstrokes, while the faces and hands perhaps represent the finer points of the argument. Fenghuang is Huang Yongyu's native district in Hunan province.
