Modern Chinese Paintings: The Reyes Collection in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford

The artist and forger Zhang Daqian was one of the most successful painters of the twentieth century, renowned for his skill and his versatility. He left China in the 1940s and lived in many different countries, including Brazil. This landscape composition fully exploits the fan format, while the extensive ink wash may be compared with his work on a much larger scale. Yuan was Zhang Daqian's alternative name.
