earthenware, glaze, lead glaze

  • earthenware

    Ceramic material made of clay which is fired to a temperature of c.1000-1200⁰c. The resulting ceramic is non-vitreous and varies in colour from dark red to yellow.

  • glaze

    Vitreous coating applied to the surface of a ceramic to make it impermeable or for decorative effect.

  • lead glaze

    A glaze to which lead oxide is added as flux to lower its melting point.

    The Barlow Collection

    The cups are very degraded and have lost much of their glaze, and may include replacements.

    The small cups are crisply moulded in oval form, resting on a flat oval base, and flanked by thick rounded, ear-shaped handles with emphasized outline and a zigzag line raised in relief. The grey pottery body is fully covered with a dark green glaze which is largely degraded and has partly turned iridescent through burial. The ears sometimes have spur marks.
