  • glaze

    Vitreous coating applied to the surface of a ceramic to make it impermeable or for decorative effect.

  • porcelain

    Ceramic material composed of kaolin, quartz, and feldspar which is fired to a temperature of c.1350-1400⁰c. The resulting ceramic is vitreous, translucent, and white in colour.

    The Barlow Collection

    The wide conical bowl has somewhat rounded sides and a flared rim, cut into six lobes. The thinly cut tapering foot has a low footring and the base is surrounded by a groove. The inside shows a quickly incised peony spray with a large bloom between two leaves, all with combed detail; the outside is plain. The blue-tinged transparent glaze leaves the main part of the base in the yellowish-brown burnt biscuit, where the character qian (money) is inscribed in black ink.
