earthenware, glaze, luted

  • earthenware

    Ceramic material made of clay which is fired to a temperature of c.1000-1200⁰c. The resulting ceramic is non-vitreous and varies in colour from dark red to yellow.

  • glaze

    Vitreous coating applied to the surface of a ceramic to make it impermeable or for decorative effect.

  • luted

    The fusion of parts of ceramics using dilute clay slip.

    The Barlow Collection

    The figures are depicted as foreigners, with strong cheek bones, thick lips and bushy eyebrows, their hair parted in the middle and rolled up around the back, each standing on a shaped plinth, the ellbows bent, the right arm raised, the hands tied into fists. They are dressed in knee-length coats, folded open at the front and back and revealing the lining, the left sleeve pushed up, the right arm freed from its sleeve, which is tied round the waist and tucked into the belt at the side. The coats are worn over a short-sleeved undergarment and boots. Both figures have skin, hair, part of the boots and the plinth left in the pale beige-coloured biscuit, the garments are covered with sancai (‘three colour’) glazes. Both figures are wearing amber-yellow coats, one with green lapels and an amber-yellow undergarment, the other with green and white lapels and a green undergarment.
