Tsuba with standing egret

Literature notes
Oblong, with the top and bottom slightly out-curved, the sides very much so; "wire" edge; the plain sd., on the front, is made to represent the body of an egret standing on one leg in a pool; katakiri engraving for the details of the bird, as also various dry reeds, and lines representing the water seen on both faces; ishime ground of large "broken-headed" punching disposed in horizontal lines (done before the engraving, but avoiding it.)
A guard of strong Ōtsuki character, although, according to the MS. Catalogue, "the companion guard, in the W. J. Stuart Collection, is signed Morichika, pupil of Yasuchika VI" (Group XL). -
