Yu Zhao was from Wanping in Hebei, or from eastern Shandong, and spent most of his life in Peking where he was a member of the Hu She Painting Society. After 1949 he held numerous public positions and at the time of his death was vice-director of the National Painting Academy in Beijing (now the Central Academy of Fine Art). His painting style was always indebted to the traditional bird and flower painters of the Song (960-1279) dynasty and he is well-known as the only painter to write specifically on colour. -
