Chinese Paintings in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford

Kun Can was from Hunan province, and when he was still quite young became a Chan buddhist monk. He spent most of his life in Nanjing, where he associated with Ming loyalist painters and writers, and where he was abbot of a monastery on Niushou Shan. The very close similarity between this work and a painting in the Crawford Collection, New York suggests that one, or both, of the paintings may be copied. See New York 1962, no.71.
