Ding Yanyong studied in Japan while young and for some years was greatly influenced by the European paintings he encountered there, particularly those of Matisse. Though he later renounced Western style, his use of flat colour with extensive ink is in neither the Chinese decorative bird and flower tradition, nor that of ink figure painting. Ducks painted in this style are a favoured subject of Ding Yanyong.
