Comrades-in-Arms: Lu Xun and Qu Qiubai

  • Literature notes

A successful print should embody the artist's observation and understanding of life, should have unique artistic viewpoint, unique printing technique and unique artistic technical approach.

Yu Qihui graduated from the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts (now called The China National Academy of Fine Arts) in 1960. His early works are primarily monochrome, with realistic figurative subjects and illustrations in both oil-based and water-soluble ink printing techniques. The image of the writer Lu Xun was initially his favourite subject. Since the 1980s, Yu has developed a ‘dab-printing’ technique, in which he applies colour by ‘dabbing’, a technique derived from ancient Chinese ink rubbings. He is the author of many books on the techniques of printmaking.
