  • Literature notes

Creating an artwork should be like this: finish it in a delightful and carefree mood, retain one's natural instincts and set loose the wings of one's imagination - let them fly away and drift.

Liu Chunjie grew up in the Great Northern Wilderness region and graduated from the Teachers’ Training School of the Heilongjiang General Bureau of State Farms. Liu has been acclaimed since the late 1980s for his water-soluble colour printed woodcuts. From 1989 to 1991, he continued his studies at the Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts in Shenyang. He used to work for Nongken (State Farm) Daily as editor, in Jiamusi and later in Harbin. He is now editor of Huakan (Art Monthly Pictorial) in Nanjing. His early woodcuts mainly depict the dreamy vast land of his hometown using the multi-block printing technique, while the subject matter of his work since his move to Nanjing in 2003 reflects greater social content.
