Baluster vase with stylized flowers

  • Literature notes

    Baluster shaped vase with an overall design of stylised flowers against a white ground.

    An unusual pattern-making design by Sōsuke who normally would have used such patterns only for borders. This is early for a white ground and it may well have been experimental.

    Formerly in the collection of Michael Tomkinson (label on base), and included in 'A Japanese Collection, in two volumes made by Michaeol Tomkinson' and published in 1898, no. E 20.

    Decorative technique in which wires are attached to a metal body and coloured enamels are applied between the wires.
