Black ware vase with plum blossom decoration

  • Literature notes

Of tall ovoid form, with splayed neck and thick rounded rim flange, the vases have a low, unevenly formed footring and a convex base. The pieces are covered with a thick, opaque dark brown glaze of matt sheen. On each side, a prunus branch has been reserved in the yellowish biscuit, the blossoms with stamens painted on in brown, and the thin offshoots at the end of the branches carved into the glaze in sgraffito technique. The footrings are left unglazed.

A pear-shaped vase of similar type and design, recovered from a tomb dated in accordance with 1199, is published in Liu Tao, Song Liao Jin jinian ciqi/Dated Ceramics of the Song, Liao and Jin Periods, Beijing, 2004, col.pl.50.
