Black ware tea bowl with plum blossom decoration

  • Literature notes

The heavy, conical bowl has very slightly curved sides, the shallow footring is unevenly shaped, and there is a ridge inside below the rim. The piece is covered with a reddish brown slip and a dark brown glaze, the former reaching over the foot, but leaving the base exposed in the light beige biscuit, the latter stopping well short of the foot. On the outside, the glaze has a matt sheen and a few lighter brown suffusions. The inside is decorated with prunus blossoms, reserved in the brown glaze by application of papercuts, while the rest has been dusted with an iron-rich solution to achieve a mottled yellowish-brown effect.
