Figure of a camel

  • loan
  • Literature notes

The camel has its head raised up high, its mouth open, and is standing four-square on a rectangular plinth. The humps are bent in opposite directions, the tail is curled to one side. The mane, front of the neck, top of the legs, and the humps all show rough fur, which is glazed in amber-yellow, like the tail, while the rest of the animal is covered with a yellow-tinged transparent glaze, probably applied over white slip. Fitted around the humps is an oval saddle cloth coloured in sancai (‘three colours’), with an incised diaper pattern and a green pleated hem border. The green glaze has run down the sides in long streaks, the amber down the legs. The body is hollow and open underneath.
