Bowl with floral decoration and a three colour glaze

    The low rounded bowl is moulded with a pattern of raised scroll motifs on the base and three bands of florets on the sides. The inside is covered in dotted sancai (‘three colour’) glazes of amber, green and white, the outside bears an amber-brown glaze, which has run towards the rim since the piece was fired upside down, supported on three spurs which have left marks in the centre inside.

earthenware, glaze

  • earthenware

    Ceramic material made of clay which is fired to a temperature of c.1000-1200⁰c. The resulting ceramic is non-vitreous and varies in colour from dark red to yellow.

  • glaze

    Vitreous coating applied to the surface of a ceramic to make it impermeable or for decorative effect.
