Bowl with three colour glaze

Literature notes
The shallow rounded bowl is thickly potted and moulded on the outside with a pattern of overlapping scales containing raised dots around a circular panel with quatrefoil florets among further dots. Both inside and outside are fully covered with sancai (‘three colour’) glazes, with amber, green and reserved white dots neatly arranged. The inside shows three raised spur marks, the rim has a thicker layer of darker brown glaze, since the glazes have coagulated when the piece was fired upside down. -

earthenware
Ceramic material made of clay which is fired to a temperature of c.1000-1200⁰c. The resulting ceramic is non-vitreous and varies in colour from dark red to yellow.

Vitreous coating applied to the surface of a ceramic to make it impermeable or for decorative effect.
