Greenware bowl with lotus petals

Literature notes
The small bowl has rounded sides with a widely flaring rim, and a straight narrow foot with a pointed base. The outside is carved in relief with narrow lotus petals, the body is near-white, the glaze of beautiful light blue-green colour with a large-scale crackle, the unglazed footring brick red. The inside has polished-down traces of grit, the rim has a gold lacquer repair decorated with tiny square flakes of gold leaf in a different tone. -

glaze, lacquer, stoneware

glaze
Vitreous coating applied to the surface of a ceramic to make it impermeable or for decorative effect.

lacquer
Chinese and Japanese lacquer is made from the sap of the lacquer tree, which is indigenous to Eastern China. It is applied to wood as a varnish or for decorative effect. In India and the Middle East, lacquer is made from the deposit of the lac insect.

stoneware
Ceramic material made of clay which is fired to a temperature of c.1200-1300⁰c and is often buff or grey in colour.
