Black ware tea bowl with 'hare's fur' glazes and auspicious inscription

  • loan
  • Literature notes

The deep rounded bowl has sturdy walls, a slightly flared rim and a low foot with a broad, unevenly cut footring. The rough dark brown body is covered with a dark brown glaze, applied in two layers. The inside is decorated with four roundels reserved in brown on an evenly mottled glaze of milky brown and bluish tones. The roundels enclose a Chinese character each, probably good wishes, including the characters jin (‘gold’) and an (‘peace’) or wen (‘literature’), but are obscured due to running glaze pigments. The outside is glazed brown with uneven splashes in similar tones. The glaze stops above the base in uneven lines, the first layer reaching further down than the second.
