Black ware bowl with russet iron splashes and a white rim

Literature notes
The conical bowl has a strongly inward curved rim, and a very low foot with a broad, footring and convex base. The inside, outside and most of the base are covered with a dark brownish-black glaze, the inner sides are decorated with five thick radiating rust-brown splashes, the rim was wiped free and is covered with a white slip and a transparent glaze, leaving a broad gap between on the outside, where the grey biscuit is exposed, as on the footring. -

Vitreous coating applied to the surface of a ceramic to make it impermeable or for decorative effect.

A semi-fluid clay applied to a ceramic before glazing either to coat the surface or for decorative effect.

stoneware
Ceramic material made of clay which is fired to a temperature of c.1200-1300⁰c and is often buff or grey in colour.
