Huangdao black ware ewer with white splashes

  • loan
  • Literature notes

The ewer is well potted, with an ovoid body, tapering towards a splayed solid foot with chamfered edge and flat base. A flat strap handle with a vertical incised line links the funnel-shaped neck to the shoulder, and a very short conical spout is attached opposite. The smooth, light grey body is covered with a matt dark brown glaze, which turns lighter and glossier near the handle, where it adheres in a thinner layer and ends well above the foot. The lowest part shows the buff biscuit, which on one side has fired brown. The sides are decorated with four large uneven splashes of a milky-beige glaze, one on each side, and one each below spout and handle, with smaller corresponding splashes at the neck both inside and outside.

A fragment of a related ewer from the Duandian kiln site in Lushan, Henan province, is illustrated in the exhibition catalogue Ceramic Finds from Henan, The University Museum and Art Gallery, Hong Kong, 1997, pl.92.
