Greenware vase with floral decoration

  • loan
  • Literature notes

This heavily potted vase is unevenly formed, the wide rounded body narrowing towards a flared foot with a broad footring with chamfered edge, and surmounted by a short straight neck with thickened rim. The rim has a groove and the neck vertically incised ribs, the shoulder a collar of six combed heart-shaped petals enclosing curly ruyi motifs on a hatched ground. The body is decorated with a combed diaper pattern enclosing small florets, and the lowest part with narrow vertical petals. The watery dark green glaze has run down to coagulate in thick glassy drops around the foot, and leaves the footring and base exposed, the coarse stoneware body has fired a bright brick-red.
