Black ware storage jar with loop handles

  • loan
  • Literature notes

Jars of this type were made for centuries for storing and transporting food or other commodities and were generally produced in south China, close to the port cities.

The heavy ovoid jar has an angle at the shoulder, four horizontally applied loop handles and a waisted mouth with rounded rim flange. The base is concave. The light beige-coloured body is covered on the outside only with a dark brown glaze, which stops above the base and was wiped from the groove around the mouth for better adhesion of a covering device, with which it would have been sealed.
