Figure of a dog with a puppy

  • loan
  • Literature notes

This group is vaguely modelled after figures of dogs of the Southern and Northern Dynasties (AD 420–589), but the hollow moulding, which includes the base, is not generally found in that period. The piece is very similar in construction to [LI1301.430], also in the Barlow Collection.

The two animals are resting on a flat plinth, thinly moulded as a single piece with hollow underside. The larger dog has a heavy chest and slender haunches, its snout, small eyes and floppy ears are indicated in relief, its long front paws holding a small puppy which is crawling up its neck, its hind legs placed close to the body, its tail curved to one side. The grey pottery is coated with a white dressing and shows traces of red pigment.
