Cizhou ware bowl with peony decoration

Similar bowls, dated in accordance with 1201 and 1230, respectively, are in the Tokyo National Museum.
With rounded conical sides and a slightly splayed foot and pointed base, the bowl is thickly covered with white slip and a transparent glaze on the inside and upper half of the outside. The inside is painted over the glaze with a quickly sketched peony spray with a bright red bloom and green foliage, surrounded by four concentric red lines, with another thin line at the rim, the enamels partly covering spur marks in the centre. The lower half of the outside is partly covered with a thin layer of slip, partly exposing the light buff-coloured biscuit. -
