Black ware bowl with russet iron splashes

  • loan
  • Literature notes

The bowl copies a Song dynasty tea bowl, but its form is much less practical than that of the typical Song pieces, its tiny foot making it unstable, its incurved rim difficult to hold. The glaze splashes are too regularly applied and it is unusual for a Song piece of this type to have the same pattern on the inside and outside.

With steep conical sides, an incurved rim, the bowl rests on a tiny straight foot with deeply recessed base. The glaze is of dark brown colour, strongly mottled on the outside, fading to a transparent light brown at the rim, and decorated with a regular pattern of radiating rust-brown splashes inside and outside. The base and footring are unglazed, the body of buff colour.
