Black ware storage jar with loop handles

    Brown-glazed storage jars of any shape and size were made in particular in the coastal regions of southeastern China. They were largely used as containers for goods to be exported.

    The ovoid jar has a thick everted rim flange, four horizontal loop handles attached at the shoulder, and a concave base. The body is of dark grey stoneware, covered with a dark brown glaze except for the lowest part, where the body shows horizontal markings from trimming.

glaze, luted, slip, stoneware

  • glaze

    Vitreous coating applied to the surface of a ceramic to make it impermeable or for decorative effect.

  • luted

    The fusion of parts of ceramics using dilute clay slip.

  • slip

    A semi-fluid clay applied to a ceramic before glazing either to coat the surface or for decorative effect.

  • stoneware

    Ceramic material made of clay which is fired to a temperature of c.1200-1300⁰c and is often buff or grey in colour.
