Vase with lobed rim

Literature notes
The vase has an ovoid body, divided into eight lobes by vertical indents which end at a horizontal line above the base. The base is recessed and has a broad uneven footring. The tall wide neck shows two pairs of horizontal grooves and flares into a wide mouth with down-turned rim, which has been raised in six places, corresponding to six radiating lines of white slip inside the neck, applied under the glaze. The buff pottery body is covered with a fine, smooth deep yellowish-green glaze, which leaves only the base free. -

earthenware, glaze, slip

earthenware
Ceramic material made of clay which is fired to a temperature of c.1000-1200⁰c. The resulting ceramic is non-vitreous and varies in colour from dark red to yellow.

Vitreous coating applied to the surface of a ceramic to make it impermeable or for decorative effect.

A semi-fluid clay applied to a ceramic before glazing either to coat the surface or for decorative effect.
