Greenware baluster vase with flowers of the four seasons

Literature notes
The vase is of baluster shape, with rounded shoulder and tall flaring neck. It has a shallow shoulder collar, and tapers towards a splayed foot with extremely thick footring and recessed domed base. The shoulder is decorated in slip relief with the Flowers of the Four Seasons, showing peony, lotus, chrysanthemum and camellia blooms on an undulating stem, and upright lotus petals below, drawn in outline with a central raised rib; the neck is plain. The somewhat opaque light green glaze does not cover the footring where the purplish-brown biscuit is visible. -

A semi-fluid clay applied to a ceramic before glazing either to coat the surface or for decorative effect.

Ceramic material made of clay which is fired to a temperature of c.1200-1300⁰c and is often buff or grey in colour.
