Literature notes
The slender bottle has rounded sloping shoulders, tapers very slightly towards the thick, splayed foot, and the narrow neck has an everted rim with a deep groove on top. The buff-coloured body bears a white slip and a transparent crackled glaze, both ending in uneven lines on the lower part of the sides, the slip protruding further than the glaze, and one drop of glaze has run down to the foot. The base and foot were left in the biscuit. The glaze crazing is stained through exposure to red earth. -

Vitreous coating applied to the surface of a ceramic to make it impermeable or for decorative effect.

A semi-fluid clay applied to a ceramic before glazing either to coat the surface or for decorative effect.

stoneware
Ceramic material made of clay which is fired to a temperature of c.1200-1300⁰c and is often buff or grey in colour.
