Black ware vase with foliated rim

A fragment of a similarly shaped black-glazed vase was discovered at the Yaozhou kiln site of Shaanxi province (see Songdai Yaozhou yaozhi/The Yaozhou Kiln Site of the Song Period, Beijing, 1998, pl.CXXVI, fig.2), but pieces of this type were also made elsewhere.
The slender vase is elegantly potted, with a wide shoulder tapering to a trumpet-shaped ‘mock’ foot, set off with a ridge, and surmounted by a slender flared neck with wavy down-curved rim. The buff-coloured body bears a highly glossy pitch-black glaze, which turns brown at the ridge, where it is thinner, and leaves the low rounded footring and base free, with grit adhering. -
