Dish with marbled decoration

Literature notes
The wide dish has rounded sides and an everted, slanting rim with raised flange around the inside. The piece has no foot but the central area of the underside is slightly recessed. The piece is formed from light and dark clays, kneaded together, but the rim was seperately attached of light clay only. The whole piece is covered with a bright leaf-green glaze. Some patches on the underside are left without glaze, where the piece would have been supported in the firing, and where another piece touched on the outside, there is a rough line. -

earthenware
Ceramic material made of clay which is fired to a temperature of c.1000-1200⁰c. The resulting ceramic is non-vitreous and varies in colour from dark red to yellow.

Vitreous coating applied to the surface of a ceramic to make it impermeable or for decorative effect.
